Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Reregistration
The European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS) requires the College to review its procedure for evaluating CPD of its members. The members of the ECVP shared and approved this requirement as a rational response to consumer-led demands for professional competence at the Annual General Meeting in Nantes (September 1999) and Amsterdam (September 2000), and the members of the ECVP were advised to maintain their own personal records of CPD.
Reregistration
As is stated in the Policies IIA art 12A of the EBVS (accepted EBVS meeting, 15th April 2000, Bruxelles), a standard procedure has to be established in which prerequisites for re-evaluation of the Diplomates for membership of the College are described. This re-evaluation has to be done under the responsibility of the College.
This standard procedure can be performed according to a credit point system. In this credit point system the following items can be included:
* publications
* presentations at national congresses or continuing education
* presentations at international congresses
* attendance of national and international congresses
* preparation of exam questions
* supervision of residents
* membership of Council or Examination Committee
For each item a maximum of points can be given. A total minimum amount of points have to be collected during a five year period. Each College has its own responsibility in creating such a credit point system, but it has to be approved by the EBVS.
The second EBVS criterion for reregistration concerns the time spent in the specialism as more or equal than 50 % of the official working time (i.e. more than 800 hours a year).
ACTIVITIES ESTEEMED AS CPD BY THE ECVP
A. Attendance at national or international congresses, symposia and meetings: this concerns the wide field of veterinary pathology
B. Active participation in slide reading conferences, pathology discussion groups, teleconferencing, peer reviewing between colleagues, etc
C. Publications and presentations related to the specialism.
D. Comprehensive (internal) reports, contributions to the ECVP exam, information / education for practitioners, etc
E. Other activities of CPD for instance training courses.
This list is not limitative, but meant as exemplary.
REQUIREMENTS FOR REREGISTRATION
A. At the end of each fifth year the ECVP member should submit his/her personal record indicating the CPD efforts during the last five years. As an average, every year the equivalent of 3 full days should have been spent on CPD (15 days in 5 years). The activities should represent different aspects of CPD; at least 3 types of CPD as listed under A through E should have been performed in the 5-year period.
B. The time spent in the specialism is more or equal than 50 % of the official working time (i.e. more than 800 hours a year).
These requirements hold for all veterinary pathologists: diagnostic, toxicologic, laboratory animal, exotic animal, pet animal, etc.
FAILURE TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR CPD
If a member does not reach the criteria for continuation of the registration as qualified veterinary pathologist this has to result in loss of the registration as active veterinary pathologist and will be placed in an inactive member status. An "Inactive Member" is excluded from ECVP Council or committee activity, ceases to have voting and nominating privileges, is deleted from the membership lists of both the ECVP and the European Board of Veterinary Specialists and is prohibited from using the title "Diplomate ECVP". If a member has been placed on "Inactive Member" status, full membership can be re-instated once he / she has achieved the required criteria.
CPD EVALUATION AND REREGISTRATION FORM
The Council has appointed a CPD Evaluation Committee. The Council invites every year the respective members to send in their CPD reports and a statement regarding working time spent in the specialism, the latest on July 1st of that year or voluntarily as much earlier as possible. An electronic form for this report is available and has to be send by Email (as AN ATTACHMENT) to the sectretary
