FINANCIAL SUPPORT BY THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION
In autumn 2004, the Summer Schools were awarded a Marie Curie Actions grant from the European
Commission (6th Framework Programme on Research, Technological Development and
Demonstration; which provides financial support for a sequence of four Summer Schools. The grant now allows
ECVP and ESVP to establish a worldwide unique programme in veterinary pathology for a Europewide
high standard research training.
This will not only lead to improvement and harmonisation of the
standard of veterinary pathology in Europe by examination, but - far more importantly – also by
facilitating the transfer of knowledge and expertise.
Thus, the Summer Schools will build a strong
research infrastructure to provide the knowledge and tools for a successful future of committed young
veterinary pathologists in biomedical research. They will substantially increase the number of highly
qualified veterinary pathologists that perform the demanding tasks in basic biomedical research, as
well as applied research in the protection of public health, wildlife conservation and development of
safe drugs. It will enable these researchers to pursue a successful career in the field and will attract
more new graduate veterinarians to research in veterinary pathology, thereby addressing a major
European/global problem, which is the worldwide dearth of professionally-trained researchers in
veterinary pathology.
The EC-funded Summer Schools will be organised by the ESVP/ECVP Education Committee,
together with the local organisers in the different Veterinary Schools in Europe, where the events take
place. They will be run as 2-week events in the second half of July.

EU funding has been made available to support the organisation of four Summer Schools and the participation of a maximum of 70 eligible researchers (see below) in each course.
Selection of eligible researchers (participants) will be according to the priorities of the EC: Priority is
given to “early-stage researchers”, represented by veterinarians within their first four years of
research training/experience in the field of veterinary pathology, and without a PhD or equivalent
postgraduate degree. Secondly, “experienced researchers” with at least 4 years of research
experience and/or with a PhD or equivalent postgraduate degree, but without any postgraduate
qualification in veterinary pathology, are eligible for financial support by the EC grant. The programme
is addressed to eligible researchers from EU, candidate and associated states, as well as from further
Eastern European countries. A certain percentage of eligible researchers from other countries can
also be accepted as participants.
For eligible researchers, registration fees will be €400. They can receive financial support towards
their travel expenses and a daily allowance.
The maximum overall number of participants will generally be 80, with the additional places available for
veterinary pathologists who do not fulfil the criteria for eligible researchers. These non-eligible
researchers will be requested to pay registration fees (€400 for ESVP-registered trainees in
veterinary pathology, €1000 for experienced pathologists) and need to provide their own funding for
travel and accommodation expenses.
