Animal species: Horse (Equus caballus)

Organ: Lung

Description: The caudal lung of this horse exhibits widespread intra-alveolar and perivascular accumulation of haemosiderophages together with diffuse congestion and acute alveolar haemorrhages. The intra-lobular vein shows severe circumferential thickening of the adventitial collagen, narrowing the vascular lumen (vascular remodelling) showing also Perls positive basophilic discolouration (iron encrustation) of the collagen fibres.

Name the condition: Exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH).

EIPH is a condition of racehorse characterised by a constellation of changes as it follows:  haemosiderophage accumulation, fibrosis of multiple compartments, vascular remodelling, and iron encrustation.
