Animal: Adult, trotter horse.

Organ: Ileum.

Diagnosis: Multifocal to coalescing, chronic, hemorrhages with fibrosis.

Findings: This lesion is unique to horses and is often found at the level of the ileum (antimesenteric side of the serosa). They are believed to be caused by larval migration of strongyles (Strongylus edentatus) causing black plaque-like lesions due to inflammation and subsequent hemorrhage and fibrosis. In general they are considered an incidental finding.
